What's the story with overbets?

Hi guys,

Long time reader first time poster..

I love the game, but to be honest, still learning the ropes really, hoping to get a insights from ye sharks hahaha

One question I have: what's the story with overbets i.e. bets bigger than the pot? When are good opportunities to use them? How can you defend against them?

Any advise would be well appreciated!

I overbet a lot and mostly like to use them mostly when my opponents range is mostly 100% bluffcatchers. It's fun when you are 200bbs deep or deeper.

lets say Kh Jh 7s flop.. you got 777.. ur stack is 3600 villians is 1600 with 1000 in the pot. just make him pay the full price to draw out or catch up..

I basically use it protecting hands on drawing boards.. Letting the villians know that if they are going to draw out then they are going to have to risk alot of their stack without even seeing the next card yet..

although with fish it doesnt matter much they cant seem to read that you have a made hand and are protecting it vs the str8 or flush etc etc.. but better players and regs I THINK?! recognize it as such..

I'm sure theres players that also do it when they have 'the big draw' as well.. the straight draw and flush draw with a pair.. NOTHING better then that hand, love to get it.

or for instance, if i get 2 limpers into my BB flop comes rainbow 10 8 3 pot of 240, with two pair ( 83 ) i might bet out 300-400 pending on stack sizes either making the person commit fully to a hand or fold.

Also on the river, love to over bet it, fish HATE folding top pair etc.. So when you do turn the set, or river the flush or whatever, who cares if theres 500 in the pot shove your 1600 in and watch KJ call you with top pair. LOL, its comical but it happens more then you would think.. I'm usually not calling these bets either, the 'donk bets' and dont have many notes on any showdowns so i'm not sure how other people play them but i think its hilarious when i have the nuts and just call ur bets all the way down then 3x the pot on the river and i still can manage a caller thinking i'm bluff/calling with intention to check shove the river?

Just my quick two cents about over bets.. hope u found it useful.

Whatcha mean his range? Like the cards he's likely to play given his stack, postion, bet size, reads etc...? It's a noob question but we're at the beginners table.. jajaja

ya, range is what type of hands they are most likely to be playing (position, stack sizes, how tight/loose they are etc)... In low limits you can often assume that it is Any Two Cards so you have to pay more attention to betting patterns and how they react to different boards (flush draw boards, paired boards, T82 rainbow etc)...

To be honest, I would avoid using overbets and stick to value bets (1/2 to 3/4 pot bets) until you have a solid foundation of understanding of what other players are doing with their bet sizing, and you can start putting them on hands.

I experimented with this a while at full ring 100nl and to my experience opponents will often call 1.5x to 2x pot overbet w precisely bluffcatchers.

I have found overbetting for value to be more profitable at those limits/games, especially considering your opponent does not need to call as often for overbetting to be profitable.

Of course there are more important factors such as your opponent (call station fish or solid reg) but just my starting point for you.
