Okay.....I'm not much of a typer, nor am I the most succint person when it comes to explaining things via posts, letters, emails, etc...but here goes.
So you want to do well st SNGs and build up your bank roll.
Well, I will give you my experience with SNGs.
First and foremost.....buy Scott Fischmans's "Online Ace" book.
Scotts book will get you up to speed very rapidly and shed some great insight for online play....especially in the SNG area.
Second....subscribe to Sharkscope www.sharkscope.com
The is by far the most powerful tool an online player has. This tool tells you EXACTLY the type of player you are up against....without having to "read" people. Face it, reading people online is very difficult....but not with sharkscope.
When you first sit down at the table and you are waiting for your premium hands....start running the names through sharkscope.....and then start making player notes against everyone....this gives you a huge advantage against the fish....as for the pros....you bet your ass, they are looking you up.
Next....depending on the level of SNG you play.....your early play will vary to a GREAT degree. The $1-6 SNGs are filled with somewhat loose players.....and by loose I mean, A9 suited trying to hit draws when the odds are not there. The players are usually pretty bad....so if you are patient, these are fairly easy to cash in each time....
The buy-ins of $11-$55 seem to be about the same.....The $33 around 8-11 at night is about the softest SNG you will find anywhere...and first place is $150.....there are a few regulars.....but very soft in my opinon.
When the blinds start going up.....you HAVE TO STEAL. If you are on the bubble and not stealing....forget it....you are going to be blinded away. Make sure you are keeping track on Sharkscope who you are stealing from....and for God sakes.....watch the short stacks.....and remember it's easier to shove than to call a shove....so be the first in....and not with low pairs.....high cards...ace....king....etc
Okay....now you and two others have made it to the money....guess what....it's a whole new tourney again. Face it....all three of you are guaranteed 20% of the total buy-in....but now you are all fighting for the other 40% (10% to 2nd and 30% to 1st)....my advice if you are chip leader to wait and let the two shorter stacks fight it out.....if you aren't, relentless aggression...
Okay.....now you have survived to the heads up stage. But you have no idea how to play heads up and win...well.....start playing HU SNGs until you win them consistently.....this will enable you to understand what hands to play pre-flop.....and what hands to stay away from. ie...high pairs win HU battles....rarely does a straight or flush win.
Remember your position and RAISE...and remember that your opponent is only going to hit the flop 30% of the time.. Employ a technique called "floating"...especially against a weaker opponent. Another technique is the "SAGE".....use it....it works....especially in SNGs, MTTs etc
There are many other things you need to know to win at the higher levels.....and if you are truly interested in learning, drop me a line and I will gladly share what I know.
I am reading Collin Moshman's Sit and Go Strategy book right now and will let you know what I think afterwards.
Good luck.
Great post Don!
I'll have to disagree with you on that one.:DQuote:

Hitman, it doesn't look like sharkscope tracks play on Bodog or UltimateBet. Are there other tools that do? Does anyone know if these sites are tracked?
No go for Bodog.. I read something about Bodog not tracking hourly hands played. Which doesn't make sense to me but that was the reason given..
The best way to handle that would be to use your Poker Tracker software and go through the arduous process of downloading handhistories and using that to ID your opponents....and their style of play.
Personally, if you enjoy playing SNGs and you want to make EASY money, play the SNGs at cakepoker.com They have BY FAR the softest SNGs out there.
I have only played the $6 and the $10. I have played about 19 games so far and have cashed in most of them. (6 handed SNGs)
My screen name is h1tman (the number "1" in place of the "I").
Also...Collin Moshman's book is a GREAT read....very easy for us "non-reader" type....full of pictures :)
Good luck at the tables.
I know little to nothing about SNGs. Moshman's book gathered a ton of heat when it first came out, but it is growing in popularity. He is working on a Heads Up SNG book right now with the help of some of the world's best players. So, uh, Ben, you better get to work!
Scott, I would love to see the results of your experiment over a 300 game sample. I am led to understand that the bank-roll requirement of SNGs are at least 100 buy-ins. This suspectability to variance is why I never bothered to learn them.
Hitmans post is one of the best I have read, I play sngs and have beat them on every site I have played(not sun poker, blinds go up too fast). For anyone who plays sngs I advise you to take in everything he just said. Scott Ficshmans book online ace has earnt me a lot of money.(well not that much I only play $20-$30 tourneys). Thanks for that tip on cake poker, I hope its the same level of play at my stakes:)
This is a very interesting experiment. The concept behind it is something I toyed with a bit when I was in the guppy phase of my poker "career". My multi-tabling skills were non-existent, playing two tables was an epic undertaking that I'd be telling friends and loved ones for many days to come. So I had the (genius!!!) idea that what I needed to do was get a big stack early and then just let myself get blinded off till I made the money. I barely tested it, after bubbling a couple times I felt it was too painful. Anyways again interesting experiment!
