What advice would you give a novice online poker player?

Honestly, I think you can replace most of those books with one article series:

And the best books I've read are Winning Poker Tournaments One Hand at a Time, and as Ben mentioned, The Full Tilt Strategy Guide.

I would definately start at a realistic buyin even if you are rolled for a higher level and probably start a level below just to feel your way around the software, get your PT/HEM comfigured how you like it, make your self familiar with all the poker aids that are available, get into a playing routine that suits you then move up in stakes when/if things begin to click into place.
