Question Call large bet on this river with only top pair?

W.S.O.P. Main Event - 100/200 blinds - I have ~ 12,000 chips and my opponent has ~ 20,000. I've won three pots in a row now and my confidence is growing even though I still only have ~ 60% of my starting stack. Three in a row meaning I won the last three that I played...

Anyways, I raised to 600 from middle position with . My opponent directly to my left called. He was Charlton-like, in that when he sensed weakness he would usually pounce pretty hard. He was Scandinavian, which is not Charlton-like. Anyways, there were 1,500 chips in the pot when the flop came:

I led out for 900 and he called. There were now 3,300 chips in the pot. The river was a blank and I checked, trying to keep the pot size under control. The river was another blank, and I felt like I was still ahead. I had a feeling my opponent was going to put a large raise in and try to steal the pot from me if I bet, so I decided to check-call or possibly check-raise. But then he surprised me by overbetting the pot. He bet 3,550, so now it was 3,550 to me for a pot of 6,850.

What would you put my opponent on here? And what would you do on the river?

I think he has a busted flush draw with AJ or similar and I would call.

I wouldn't push here because it's possible that he has a set of deuces, but unlikely since he checked the turn.

The reason that I wouldn't push with top pair with 2nd best kicker is because that it's not a BIG hand, so I would try to limit my exposure with a call. If I push, I only get called with a set of ducks or two pair.
We must believe in luck. For how else can we explain the success of those we don't like.

I wouldn't slow down with 2 clubs on that flop.

I think you have to call. I put him on a busted draw also, or maybe he turned/rivered a set. He would be stupid to put in a bet with anything that's beating you or closely losing to you (JJ, 1010, QJ) because he's not getting much value usually, only getting called by a hand that beats him. I don't think he flopped a set because checking the turn with a set on a possible 4-flush board is dangerous.

The way you played it, he probably puts you on A high or maybe a middle pair and he can get you to fold.

    Any two cards...

I couldn't really think of a hand he could have here that had me beat where he would have checked the turn behind me, so I called his river overbet.

He said, 'nice call', and mucked his cards. But before the dealer gave me the pot she said, 'you have to show me a winner'. I didn't feel like arguing, so I just flipped up my cards. Then my Scandinavian friend went off and started telling me how 'stupid' and 'unbelieveable' my call was. He told me how I 'couldn't beat anything but air'. I thought for a few seconds and replied, 'I'm sorry, but isn't that exactly what you had - air'?

He was on tilt for almost an hour...

I agree with wreak!...out there in the WSOP events you can't slow down (unless you are prepared to make the big call on the end or you are traping) or else you will be faced with this same situation Scott had. I am not surprised he was from scan. they tend to over bet most pots especially if the sense weekness. My take on this is if you would have continued to bet your hand on the turn and river he would not have tried to make this bet at the end. If you are going to play it slow like that you might lose to 2 pair more than anythng in my opinion but taking consideration the player pushing you made the right call.
