My buddy Dave Nutini has bigger balls than me, and he proved it to the poker community Saturday night.
Final table of the Bad Beats $100 game this past weekend. Nine players remained. Dave was the chip leader with 62,000 chips and I was in second with 43,000. Blinds/antes were 400/800/100. I was on the button and Dave was in the big blind.
Most people would expect the two chip leaders to stay out of each other's way, but those people just don't understand how competitive Dave and I are.
It folded around to me, so I raised to 2,000 with. I'm sure Dave didn't like me raising his big blind.
Dave re-raised to 5,800 with. I sure didn't like his re-raise, but figured he would probably do this to me about half the time. So of course I called. He couldn't have possibly liked that, since he was now out of position in a large pot with ten high.
There were now 12,900 chips in the pot and the flop came:
Dave led right out for 8,000, which I hated. So of course I raised to 22,000 which he hated. Then he called, which I REALLY hated. There were now 56,900 chips in the pot and the turn came:
We both checked and I decided to push on the river regardless of what card came. The river came:
Dave pushed all in, and I deliberated briefly. I actually considered calling, but if I was wrong and he actually had a jack I would be gone. With 19,000 chips and the button at a full table, I felt like I still had enough chips to make a comeback if I folded. So I did. Then he showed his hand and my only choice was to shove my face into the kitchen sink.
So who else has ever let a pot careen completely out of control when neither player had a hand? I know I've done this with Ben and George before. I wasn't proud of it then, and I didn't feel any better losing this monster pot (and the tournament) this weekend either.![]()
