Tournament Strategy

I am playing in a little $40 tourney this weekend. Here is the structure.

70-80 expected entrants
top 10% cash
$5 Bounty
$1200 starting chips
Blinds start at 5/10 and double every 30 minutes
7 or 8 to a table
I'm guessing it will be a fairly weak field. A few good players but weak as a whole.

Very unorthodox structure. Because of the short stacks and shorhanded tables, I think I have to approach this tourney like it was an online turbo.

Any thoughts? What should my plan be?

Also, it is in Lancaster for a charity (50% cut :(). Let me know if anyone is interested in coming.

I'd play it like a low limit MTT online. If there are tons of fish just look for your spots to double through and only stick to those hands. I try to only play hands online with my best chance to double up.

Most donks consistently call any bet with top pair which makes it perfect for players like us. Also I like to get aggressive on a weak inexperienced table. I shove on a lot of limps because most don't like the simple fact of risking their stack without seeing a flop, or you just get called by nothing better than A10 off and then your cards are live.

This is the strategy that has been working for me lately.

Good luck Bruce, hope you TID... I personally think you are better off staying at home and pissing on your $40 but if you do play be prepared for some ugly beats. The structure is terrible and the 50% rack (albeit for charity) will make you question why you are playing for so little a few hours into it.. I agree with Lorcat that you need to pick your spots, but this event with the short handed short stack structure will force you to double up very early or go home. If I was you I would spend a little bit more money and play in a real game like BadBeats.

I know I'm better off staying at home. But after the beats and coolers I saw last night, I'm willing to pay a 75% rake just to change things up.

Worst structure ever. Your strategy in a tournament like that is to hope that you're lucky, because that's the only way you win it.
