    Tough laydown of top pair

    At tonight's $100 tourney.

Our table is 6 handed, blinds 100/200 no ante, avg stack 14,000.

I'm in second position with and raise to 625... scott cook calls from button and as chip leader... dave gatliff (sp?) calls from BB and shortest stack.

    Flop

Dave bets 1200 into 1975 pot... I raise to 3000... Scott reraises enough to put me all in for my remaining 10,000 or so...

Now I know Scott is capable of multiple plays here. He is obviously attempting to communicate significant strength here and is probably trying to represent 99, 66, 55, 78... I feel he would have reraised me preflop with TT or better.

I also feel like Scott is capable of making this play as a bluff or semi-bluff (eg flush draw and overcards) knowing I would have to have a very big hand to put my tournament on the line...

    What do you do here?

Yea, if you're behind here, you are WAY behind. And secondly, making a hero call here really only puts you at probably slightly better than even money AT BEST. That is assuming that Scott is not on a complete bluff, but considering that Dave G. bet out at this into a 3 way raised pot, tells me that Scott has to have at least hearts with 2 overs to the board.

In cash I could understand the compulsion to call, but in a tourney this is a snap-fold. No need to be a hero with 60-70 BBs.

Well Derek, I was able to fight off my cash compulsion to call here and got away from it... although it was pretty tough

    fold preflop?
I like calling flop rather than raising here since it is so drawy and you still have a player yet to act who's flat calling range is all over this board

In this hand, I was holding:

I pushed all-in for three reasons. First, I was fairly certain I had the best hand, Second, I didn't want another heart or overcard to come on the turn. And third, the pot was plenty big already.

I fold this preflop at a full table, but 6 handed I am perfectly happy with the holdings with 4 players to act.

It seems that raising here actually saved me money having seen what Scott's holdings were. He would have most likely raised to roughly the same amount had I just called and I would have probably been more likely to call behind, potentially costing me money on the turn as well. I prefer to find out where I am in a hand sooner rather than later and I feel I accomplished that

im sorry didn't read closely enough, didn't realize that you were 6 handed... raising is fine here PF

easy fold on flop given action you're racing at best against a combo draw, drawing dead at worst

i really dislike the "finding out where I am at thinking" especially on drawing boards because you can often get pushed off by a strong drawing hand whereas if you pot control and can see a safe turn, villain's odds of hitting decrease dramatically and will often slow down, thus you can narrow down his range more accurately. seemed to work out for you in this situation though, good fold.

P.S. I think Scott's shove here is fairly marginal given the deep stacks and two raises in front, but it seems he made the right read.
