Tourney Theory Question (JJ in MP with 14BB)

    Venetian Deep Stack event....

    Blinds are 1000-2000-300

I have roughly 30K in MP.

I look at Jacks, and I would normally shove in this spot, but I have not been able to get all-in for awhile with a similar stack in relation to the blinds. I really need to double or go home at this point IMO (which I may be answering my own question)

Well, I raise "short" to 6500. Which is more that I would normally raise (but this table doesnt know that because its my 2nd hand here) I really want to see if someone will shove me in....as I'm trying everything I can to get all-in here. I get a button 3 bet to 20K, and of course I put the rest in.

Now my question in theory, is...is it incorrect for me to TRY to get a showdown? I could have easily have shoved 30K....taken down 6K and increased my stack by 20%. Instead I "induce" a player to shove in and put my tournament at risk....even though I was solidly ahead, as the button showed A3s (which I thought was a terrible play on his part)...but alas, I was trying to force a mistake and I think I made him make a poor decision, as I clearly cant fold here.

So am I not playing optimal tournament strategy by inducing a showdown? When I can take down pots uncontested?

This is probably a steam post and I'm sure my play is fine, but I'd like some thoughts....

Great question, I like the play. I think that the risk is worth the reward. An extra 6,000 chips won't take you very far. An extra 30k and you're in business.

Is this a live event or online?

Reading between the lines it sounds as if villain hit the ace!! :-(

I was talking to a guy who won the Sunday Brawl and he said to me "at some stage in a tourney your going to have to suckout or win some key races whether you are a slight fav or a slight dog for your whole stack to have a chance of going deep and winning".

This looks like one of those times but you have managed to craft a play where you are a massive favourite in the hand and have put yourself in a great spot to go deep with a chance a making a decent cash. At this point you couldn't have asked for a better outcome and your play has worked out as you hoped.

On a side note if this was online, just raising with a stack where you are looking at a shove the majority of the time given the blinds and antes, screams I want action to me and there is no way Im coming over the top of you with a Rag Ace, its going straight in the bin for me.

In a live situation I wouldnt know what to do as I have never played live, but I would probably just shove, but the play you made is much more sophisticated and one I like a lot!! ;-)

You can't play a hand any better than this when your a massive favourite and optimal tourney poker at its best!!

Unlucky if he hit his 3 outer or better.

Someone said that in order to win a tournament, you have to win like 5 hands that you are not suppose to. Tell me if there is anyone who has taken down a tourney without sucking out.

15bb with JJ tbh, raising or shipping doesn't make that much difference. If they have a hand they like, they will go with it. What was the button's stack? if 30k was like nothing to his stack, gg. The flips are just brutal in live... I busted my venetian after making a squeeze from bb with AQo for 40 bb after seeing utg+1 rase and 4 flatters. The old guy called for his entire stack with 55 after limping, and obv holds. mbn.
