Question Straight on river - call all in here?

    Venetian $340 Deep Stack Event - Level 3 - $100/$200

Several limpers so I called from the small blind with

    Flop came

One limper bet 400, I called and everyone else folded.

    Turn:

    Check, check.

    River:

I bet 1,200, and my opponent pushed all-in for ~ 6,500 more. Our stacks were pretty close to equal. What does he have, and what would you do if you were me?

Any reads on the opponent? Lots of fish in these tourneys, so if he's one he could be thinking 45 is the nuts. A competent player will put you on some type of 4 and shove with a FH. If he's fishy I snap call, if he's competent I fold. This one is pretty dependent on a read on the villain for me.

Is this a live game? Was villain a late position limper or early?

This is a $340 live tournament with 819 players. Opponent is a middle position limper who I felt was extremely solid.

i fold here. i cant really put him on limping with 58 or 8 10, but he could very easily have limped with 66 or 77 and have you crushed right now

    hand

i really do not think he has a full house. if he is a solid player i see no reason for him to check turn when he hits the boat. a hand you d have to think about is 10-8 he takes a shot on the flop checks the turn and hits bigger st8 on river. i am not sure if he can ship it with this hand . All this being said i call in these spots if you only call when you have a boat you are gone to get bluffed a nice amount. by no means do i think you always have the best hand but i do think it is 50/50 and with chips in the pot it makes it a call

I have zero live expeience but as Im going to play a few live tournnies shortly I will take a stab at it :-)

From a live tourney prespective Im sure peoples starting hand requirements are a lot wider to that of online tourney play so small PPs and suited gap/connectors come into the equation alot as well as slow played monsters.

In a multiway pot I would lead out on any draws and fast play a set on a board that could have connected with a wide range of drawing hands.

If I had hit the boat on the turn I would probably check behind as well and give Scott the free river card to improve his hand, then make a move on the river. You may be missing some value in not betting the turn but if Scott improves which he has your going to get paid off a lot more.

I still wouldnt rule out 8,10 here either especially after the shove over your river bet or a similar straight but Im more inclined to think your river bet is just called with a similar straight.

This sooo stinks of a boat to me or a higher straight, so I would reluctantly fold.

I hope Im wrong and you made the right decision and doubled !! :-)

Having just read everything again I made a bit of a cock up and have just realised that Scott was first to act so have ammended my reply.

If he's a solid player I think I have to fold in this spot.

I completely agree with this statement, and now we know he is solid its a fold for me. You have just value bet your hand and I dont think a solid player comes over the top of that with A4. Unless he thinks that YOU are a fish and that is unlikely. Fold for me.

This is definitely a really tough spot if you think this guy is a pretty good player. But, this is a tournament and you can't always wait for the perfect spot. I would say you have to call here. You can't play a hand like 53o and be folding when you make the well concealed straight or you are just throwing chips away and you would be better off folding from the start. True, the fullhouse is in the realm of possibilities here but I think your straight will do well against the majority of his range. I call here and chalk it up to one of those hands you just can't get around.

Folding a made straight on the river here would be similar to flopping a set and folding because you put him on a higher set. I don't think my reading abilities will ever be strong enough to do that.
