To set the scene, I'd used few reraises up to this point and we'd been playing together for quite a while, so he'd seen me flip very good hands when my reraises got called.

I believed my opponent was a good player (lol) and capable of making a solid laydown, and I thought my play would be consistant with hitting the straight.

He thought about it on the river for a good 20-25 secodns before calling, so I know I was close. So did I mess this up, or could I have done this better?
Out of my mind, back in 5 minutes.

Ummmm, why are you even calling pre...no reason too...and bluff doesn't make sense, better bluff would be two barrelled, on the turn and the river betting for value so 2/3 pot each time. Do you want to risk that much bluffing? Didn't think so but your story didn't make enough sense for top set to fold, but if you put in a big reraise (not over bet, but 3x his bet), then he woulda folded I think...maybe
Finally a new post in my blog, view at: http://www.badbeatspoker.net/forum/blogs/cdavi/

I would definately expect a turn bet with a straight if I was villain if only to protect it from the two possible flush draws and if villain has got you down as a solid player could he put you on a range of hands that makes the straight for you? 1010, A10 and 55 would seem the likely possibilities but would you call an UTG+1 raise with A10 or 55? With 1010 I would definately be re-raising on the flop so I like Chris's approach to the bluff as well, but definately a fold pre-flop for me.

if there was ever a villain who didnt fit the description...here he was..lol

one thing I think I forgot to note is that I'd used this pattern of betting several times with big hands, thus the wierd wierd pattern.

Your play was not consistent with hitting the straight at all. It's consistent with passively played missed flush making a desperation bluff at the pot.

    Preflop is pure spew.

if you give a guy even a regular at these stakes credit for noticing exactly this in a full ring game then you give your opponents way much credit. i agree that the bluff on the river is in no way consistent of having made the straight and i would put you on pretty much what you have at this particular point. further more i tihnk you play the entire hand completely terrible. you make a god awful flat call preflop. you don't reraise when you hit close to your dream flop and you decide to make a horrible bluff on the river.

    Preflop call? Why?

Think about your line - bet call, check check, check barely minraise.... Really bad line. For all you know his turn check was more to induce a bluff than anything. Played way to passively imo. Maybe if you fire turn and shove river you might get a fold but probably not. You flopped a monster that went nowhere and bluffed weak to try to get out of it which is way to spewy. I'm snap calling river reraise. Just my opinion...

your only getting called by a hand that beats you, so if your going for a bluff you got to make sure hes going to fold, ie shove the river or fold imo

    fwiw fold pre
