Thanks for the input everyone. The hand was in a cash game, not a tournament. It really wasn't a big deal; at the time I thought it resembled a slowroll but only somewhat, and now after hearing the responses I understand this is normal for cash games.
I really hate that people keep their cards facedown during cash game all-ins, but if that is the way most people do it, so be it.
In the particular hand, I still don't like the fact that if I hit a jack, I get no information. I don't know if I was behind and needed the jack, or if I was flipping, or if I had him dominated. He knows a lot about how I play and can rebuy and use this information, and I know little about how he plays, even though we both put in the same amount of chips.
Obviously I am happy to win the pot in exchange for not getting information, but still, I don't see why it's unreasonable to ask to see the losing hand on an all in. For what it's worth, I have never asked to see someone's hand if he wanted to muck. I just wanted to get clarification on what the unofficial rules are since I play almost entirely 1 2 where people barely know the official rules, let alone unofficial rules or points of etiquette.
