Why do people hide their winning hand until the end?

I don't play cash games much but after all the replies, I understand it is standard to just wait until the end for either player to show, if at all.

I flipped over my hand because I thought I had to show anyway, being the one who shoved and having been called.

But I could have just not shown and mucked?

Would it then be poor etiquette on his part to ask to see my hand? I thought part of calling a bet is that you get to see the other guy's cards.

you can hold onto your hand til all the cards are out, then obv if you had quad jacks or something it would be proper for you to insta show and allow the other guy to muck if he wishes. Asking to see a losing hand in cash is really bad. Someone mentioned it earlier the only reason its done in tournies is to stop collusion and chip dumping. Cash games just go by "show and take", if you have a hand show it to take it down, the guy with the nuts should just insta show. Some people are just asses, they will call you and wait for you to verbally declare what you have (i never just show), and you will say like small pair and they will flip over top two (which is clearly good), instead of just calling you and telling you they have two pair so you can quietly muck. I dont really see the point in any bs but thats me.

I agree with your post. It's really not a big deal. In the given situation, I don't see the harm in saying "You need a jack," but it's not necessary.

I know that collusion is the reasoning behind the rule but it's still a bit odd, since the rule doesn't prevent collusion in a tournament (just dump chips without going all in), and also, people might collude at a cash game also; so why have an anti-collusion rule that is used differently in tournaments than in cash games?
