As others have said excersise is the biggest thing. Labs are very active dogs. I have raised and trained Rotts for many years and they are very active as well. If you dont give them something to do they will find their own things to do which is usually destroying your stuff. Labs are the same way. I taught mine to walk on the treadmill. I promise you, if you walk the dog twice a day on good steady kind of lengthy walks, you will see a decrease in hyperness. Alot of people simply dont have time to go on two one hur walks a say, I certainly dont which is why I went with the treadmill. Neutering will usually add some mellowness to them as well. Not really an issue with Labs but if anyone has Rotts, Pitts, Dobies etc... you dont want to neuter too early. This will impede growth as hormones are produced by the nads. Also there is evidence that neutering too early in many breeds but especially large breeds can actually increase the chance of cancer.
