Thumbs down Todd Brunson in Financial Dire Straits

    January 27, 2009

The buzz around twoplustwo.com message boards in centering around the financial status around Todd Brunson, one of the world’s leading poker players as well as the son of living legend Doyle Brunson.

According to a post he made on CardPlayer magazine as well as comments made on Poker After Dark, the current financial crises in the United States has had a profound negative impact on his finances. Brunson had invested in several restaurants and bars, several of which have gone belly up, taking his investments down with them.

Specifically, Brunson invested heavily into a developing entertainment complex in Las Vegas and as a result is experiencing difficulty in getting a bank to loan him some capital. In addition to the real estate issues, he allegedly will not be appearing on Poker After Dark and High Stakes Poker as much as expected, furthering to weaken his standing.

Some forum pundits are beginning to speculate that he no longer has a significant poker bankroll as he is seeking investors to stake him into events. He appears to have hit a serious wall and with the rising caliber of poker players out there, this has to be a major concern.

No word yet on whether his father Doyle will be of any assistance now that his son is in trouble.

This is bad news, but someone will stake him and he'll get back. If someone would back Mike Matusow when he was hitting rock bottom, someone will back Todd Brunson. Great article, offers a lot of perspective to poker players.

He never struck me as a brilliant individual. I'm sure daddy will stake him.

I think it's probably a good argument for bankroll management! However, in this economy, it'll be interesting to see how poker is affected.

My brothers just got back from Vegas and said that the strip was nearly deserted ....

I have been reading that smaller casinos are doing better than Vegas mainly because people are trying to stay closer to home and not travel far to gamble.
This will probably continue for a couple of years and hurt gaming destinations such as Tunica, Vegas and AC.

Todd is, without doubt, one of the best if not the best limit hold 'em players in the world. His absolute domination of this area of hold 'em is unknown to many as he is more well known for being a nitty, risk-averse type. He has always been a canny business-man and unlike many of his fellow professionals, he diversified into many industries. How ironic it is then that with nowhere to hide in the current economic climate, he of all people has been hit on all fronts.

However, he has many friends in the game, is admired for his intellect and skill and will no doubt rebuild successfully.
