    CHESS? POKER?

    When a player is doing well they say he/she(gonna use he) was/is a good chess player. As a chess player I have yet to see the corilation between chess and poker. Yes u have to think but another queen DOES NOT come up on 3rd street like a hooker(hehe)! Chess is NO LUCK AT ALL! YOU PLAY WELL U WIN! BUT this goes to my other post on free rolls and playing cash! IVE BEEN tainted by suck outs vs good play. I LOVE CHESS! highest rating 1802. Love to think about crap that has NOTHING to do with everyday life(lmao)! So what's harder CHESS or POKER? NL holdem? OMAHA? BADUGI? ect? when it comes to PURE THINKING!? WHAT is the ONE GAME in ppoker where u have to think ALOT! THE ONE GAME WHERE thinking gonna win more then luck?

    chess and poker

    one thing you said is 100 percent correct no luck is involved in playing chess. the better human player will win every time a game is played

    Although i have not played chess competitively since high school and my highest ranking was 1712 i think it has a great to do with poker. In my opinion a good chess player has all the tools to make a great poker player. Much like chess poker is all the about your opponent and what they are capable of . you only try a certain move if you feel it is gone to work this is true at the poker tables and the chess board. i am not a person who believes poker has a whole lot of luck involved in the end the math will equal itself out.

    I like to think of it as:

    Chess = 99% Skill

    Bacaratt = %100 Luck

    And that gives us two sides of a Luck/Skill spectrum which contains every other game.

    If the amount of Luck involved with poker is giving you a head ache (Variance) maybe it isn't your game? Or perhaps you have a little more studying to do. . . because the more skill you bring to the game the less you have to worry about Luck, though it will always be there.

    Incidentally Backgammon is a nice compromise between Chess and Poker. . . maybe you should give it a shot!

    As far as less variance forms of poker. . .not sure, but you should probably avoid PLO. LHE might be a good one.

    Of course there is luck in chess.

    1.
    Opening preparation. Some players play significantly stronger in one type of position than in another. For instance I was rated 1848 (when I was still playing a bunch), but my adjusted rating for when I played the black side of the KID was just over 2100.

    Effectively, my opponents were playing 2100 rated player when they opened with 1 d4, but they played a 1850 player when they opened with 1. e4.

    That's an element of chance for them if they have no way of knowing what openings I specialize in.

    There are plenty of other arguments as well. I might end up shooting for %10 luck.

    I think it actually has to do with your mental processes. Players who are experts at chess think differently about the game than those who are amateurs. They preconsciously cue what moves and situations are relevant, and then consciously think through the cued information. It reduces time for decisions, helps them focus on only what is important, and they think in chunks of information rather than analyzing every move.

    If you have this type of thought process as an expert chess player, then I think the same style of thinking would transfer to poker well. It would probably just help the player make better decisions and recall past hands better.

    This is all from psychology so I think it seems like a safe bet.
