ISPC Event #1 Chop Input Please

I was part of a 10-way chop for this event, but ultimately won the event and a $1,600 seat for the main event Saturday 8.28.10. A total of 965 players participated in this $300 plus $40 Deep Stack event played over 2 days. The structure was a little rough as I was 23 of 111 after day one with 17 big blinds. At the end, everyone was between $1 million and $3.5 million chips with the blinds at $80K and $160K. 10th place was $2,500, the chop gave everyone $17,563. My chip stack at the end was just under $2 million. This is my first major cash and I was hoping for some feedback on chopping.

I already told you this but I think you made a great decision! It turns into a shove fest at this stage with everyone short-stacked. Third place $$ and the seat is an excellent scoop

definately a good chop. its a crap shoot to get top 3 in this type of structure unless the table is folding every single hand. 3rd place money is great.

anytime you can lock up 3rd place money with 10 left you have to be happy...

great job man, as an average or lower stack, it is an easy decision to take a chop that guaranteed 3rd place money. Even if you are near the top, chopping is a pretty good idea in these fast structures unless you are a monster chip leader in which I'd tried to get a few more KOs for a better deal. I had a small chop this weekend 5 handed where CL had CL 40% of the chips but there were only 40 BBs play and the 3 of us locked up in between 2nd and 3rd place money. Variance is ridiculous with short stacks and locking up good money is never a terrible idea.

Do you think if you asked for 18000 or no deal anybody would have said no? If not, you missed (atleast) $500 for free. It's hard to find times in life where you can just ask somebody for big money and they hand it to you in cash.

My congrats .... but it's a litllebit retarded to make 10way chop-LOL , when everybody wnats to chop on 10 way ft- it's mean same like buble for all this people so you should declined and use this to make BIG stack witchout showdown and going to win or negotiate when 5-3-2 plr left ... but this is only my opinion .... sorry for grammar like alweys

What I believe Karol is trying to say is that if EVERYONE wants to chop because the structure is so brutal, you should have declined and raised every single unopened pot and reraised the ones who you think would fold and put on a steal, as you would on the money bubble, FT bubble, etc... There is obvious risks in that you would have to be willing to ship with almost any two cards and ship often. Once in a while you'll run into a real hand and be up sh!t creak without a paddle, but most of the time you'll make yourself a large stack. You know this and because you have to ask if chopping was a good move, it was a good move. If you started shoving and got called by any hand and lost, you would have regretted it immensely. I can tell just by your post. You want to think you could have said that it wouldn't have bothered you, but you are human and you were worried about losing, as were the other 9 people. The best players are never scared of getting eliminated in any tourney. Don't get me wrong, they hate it, they just aren't scared of it. This is what we all strive to get too IMO...

This tourney sounds a little rediculous though with the levels and how you describe it. Myself, I'd be happy with having an average stack and getting third place money. Even if you won and are wondering if you should have chopped. I guarantee the play loosened right up after you chopped though and it would have played out completely different. I say good job, but understand why others would disagree.
