Looking for some coaching

Dude you have played 982 games, when you have played more than 4k games then you can talk. You play no volume.

And for the record, how do you evaluate the results of professional players who play live? So if a player like Cunningham or Hellmuth play only 100live tournaments a year and both of them take two or three bracelets in the WSOP do you call it nothing but luck because they haven't notched up
1000's of live tourneys? Do you surmise they can't have played good poker to get those results because only after someone has played 1000's of games can they be sure they are actually playing well?

Up until 5 years ago to play 1000s of tourneys was unheard of. It is only with the advent of online poker that people will play 10 to 16 tables at the one time. This did not change the fact that good players such as Brunson, Cloutier and Ungar were winning tournaments and their skill level manifest in their results. How many tourneys could those guys have played in a 10 year period before online poker hit the scene? Did they just get lucky? How could it be skill? They don't have a bazillion quadrillion SNGs under their belts for it to be skill.

I think most online players have overestimated the actual sample size needed for a statistic to be significant. I did some fairly advanced statistics courses when doing my business degree and based on what I learnt about linear regression and other statistical theories, I don't think you need 1000 tournaments to make an assessment of how well someone is playing. If someone who usually makes a lot of money is having a 10K downswing, there has to be something they are doing wrong, or the poker site is irregular in some way.

I didn't say Phil plays crap, I said Phil played poorly in the WSOP 2009. I actually don't think Phil is such a great player. I think he plays with way too much tilt and attitude to be one of the best players. He's got nothing on Negreanu, Cunningham and Ivey in my opinion, but that is beside the point.

I know about different structures. I don't see why that matters. We are discussing volume, as in frequency of games and its relationship to determining how good a player is.

The whole point of the this thread, I thought, was to get coaching. I thought my game was pretty good as I have had good success in my career. The last two years running 99.50% on opr. Being the top player out of 200, if you do the math is pretty good, right.

Well not so fast, the fact is my rating is based on my skill at 45 man sngs. The 45s hide some of the leaks in my game. When I received my first lesson with Herschelw I realized how much I dont know and how much I have to learn. Books only help so much and my autopilot game is too tight and I will blind my self down too much.
If you compare poker ability to baseketball, I think I would be division II star. I am working on being a division I star. Someone like Dr. Fill Good would be a starting regular and someone like Tom Dwan would be Kobe or Jordan.

I guess my point is that if you want to be good, you need to be honest about your abilities and most of us will need help to move to the next level. It is clear from this thread Anthony you have much to learn. That is not a knock on you, just a poker fact, getting some help from kennl or j4bber or a pay site will definitely help your game.

I do want to say the tangent this thread took has made me laugh.

All arguments aside, I agree with you completely. I have much to learn and that is why I am looking for a coach. I would say I am a fair player, not quite good, not quite bad, but fair and improving. My goal is to take fair and improving, to being a good getting onto great player in the next couple of years.

Yes this thread took a bad beat and some may have been uncalled for but some was brought on by you. Wait before you want to react because I know you want to hit Quick Reply already because my comments sound harsh which you cannot handle.

A while back I recommended this site to you because I watched you play and thought you had potential but you definitely had the wrong mindset. You understood the basics and knew how to play tight poker, but you were thinking about poker in the totally wrong way. From your posts, I know you still are. At that time you came on here and no matter how many different people told you, we were wrong and you were right. Period. You sugar coated it and made it all sound so nice, but you were convinced you were right and we were all crazy...lucky even to make any money, especially on FTP. Then, a very good, I mean VERY GOOD, player offered you a chance to win 500 dollars if you pay 100 dollars and have him ghost you. Instead of taking it, you got all defensive and change the subject and ignored the possibilities. You would have learned so much from that offer that 100 bucks woulda been small potatoes to you, if you took it and learned from it.

Now you are looking for a coach and you are finally willing to spend that money. The thing about being coached is you have to be willing to be coached. I believe that if that player ghosted you and found 5 (or more) major flaws, you would have defended your plays and came up with the reason why you are right and he is wrong. I also believe you would do that with a coach right now. A lot of the replies to comments by you are very defensive and your thoughts downplay the good pieces of information you are receiving. There are some brilliant minds on this site who might not pass on information in a productive "hold your hand until you get it" manner, but they are still passing on this very valuable information. You need to remove yourself from the situation, lose the defensiveness and just accept what people are trying to tell you, no matter how harsh. If you can do that, then you will be ready to be coached. Until then, you will learn for a little while and will be back posting bad beat stories and telling us about the time you won 4K one time or how you ran hot for 120 games another.

If and when you do find a coach, listen to them and no matter how harsh they are making their comments, process them and try to think of them from your perspective. Just because shoving AQ worked in a tourney last week, doesn't mean it will work today. The game changes. The situation changes. There is no secret formula to win at poker. You always have to think about the big picture and have more of an open mind. Without an open mind, you will not learn.

Been there and done that. My biggest online cash came in 2006 when I had no clue what I was doing. Oh in my mind I knew how to play, but in hind site I was a bigger fish than I am now.

The one comment that struck me oddly was when Anthony said that he might have a few leaks but nothing major. If this were the case, you would have many more Final Table appearances and and a lot more profits to show. In order to get better, you need to recognize that your game is flawed and needs improvement. You have to be willing to accept criticism and most times unlearn what you already know and relearn how to play poker from someone who crushes the game. Good Luck.

I completely agree. In my lessons with Herschelw he appologized for being too passionite about talking about one or two of my mistakes. I welcomed his passion because I want to get better, and I know I have a lot to improve. I believe I might need 5 or 6 sessions of coaching to fix some things that are too common in my game.

At work when I get an evalutation I dont like to get defensive because then I cant see their (the person giving the evaluation) truth of their perspective.

Hey CD, thanks for the feedback, even if I don't like to hear some of it. I agree, that notwithstanding my stated suspicions of the site at the time, my game had, and still has a long way to go.

I did want to have Vestvik watch my game and look for my flaws. Firstly, I wasn't sure he was seriously. I was a bit humbled by his offer. After all, he is making money playing poker so his time is precious. Secondly, I was very busy with other committments at the time. That was back when I was only able to find one afternoon and one evening to play.

I am still willing to accept Vestvik's offer but it would have to wait until after next week as I am travelling to Vietnam.

I am ready to learn CD. My comments in that particular thread, if pulled out of context, can look more defensive than they sounded. I am a fairly passionate person and it may come across more argumentative in text. I still honestly beleive that even a pro can make 5 errors in a 5 hour period.

I didn't realise I was showing an aversion to learning. I would do anything to get better at this game and irrespective of any personal defence to comments made, I value every input I receive from the players on this site and respect their poker skills immensely.
